On Mission

Bazar Sabado

We wanted to have some vacation time on this trip, however, it is working out that "our vacation" time is just a few hours here and there in between time with Mexican churches, leaders and misisonaries. However, it has still been good to be together as family.  Before we left Mexico City on Saturday to come to Cuernavaca, we went to a Saturday Bazaar in the Park. It is called Bazar Sabado en San Angel. We visited this bazaar a few times when we lived in the city. It is in a nice colonial area of the city. They have artists who display their art for sale in the park on Saturday. We had a nice breakfast and enjoyed time together in the park admiring the Mexican art.

La Ciudad

We continue to have a very fruitful time in La Ciudad, Mexico City. We are reminded of the overwhelming size, the wonderful opportunities as well as the challenges of living in such a mammoth city. It has rained almost every day and the joke is that anytime we are ready to make a move and go somewhere else, it starts to rain. It is more difficult to be without a car and rely upon public transportation, even though the public transportation here is great!

We had a great time with the Henderson family in Thursday afternoon. They have a wonderful apartment with a private back yard which is unique in an apartment complex. They are doing well and have settled back into life and ministry very well after their furlough in the states. I believe that James and Erin will be used by God in an important way as He advances the work in Mexico City. Sherry and I were able to make it back to the Sunset House in time to eat with Juan Pablo Yalaupari, one of teammates when we came to the city in 1987 along with Israel and Alejandro, members of the Benito Juarez congregation that meet in the Sunset House. I am impressed with their maturity and their desire to see God's kingdom grow in their lives and in their city. We continue to be impacted by the difficulties most experience in life in Mexico and the City. The economic crisis, the war against the drug cartels, the effect of the H1N1 Flu as well as just the attacks from Satan. All make it challenging to live in Mexico right now, however, God is at work. I am impressed with the faith of my brothers and sisters.

Yesterday, we saved to just spend together as a family. We traveled to the Zocalo, the center of the city, went to the Templo Mayor (the archaeological site of the center of the ancient civilization that inhabited this valley before the arrival of the Spanish) and of course spent some time on the top of the tower of the Latin Americas. Because of the rain it was a beautiful day. I am attaching some pictures of our day.

Today we are spending some time at a special Saturday Bazar in a park in San Angel and then taking a bus to Cuernavaca. Hopefully, we will make it to celebrate the 4th with the missionaries in Cuernavaca. Thank you for your prayers.

Time in Mexico City

We have been enjoying our time in Mexico City. It is good to be back in the Sunset House. Ryan joined us yesterday. He arrived with no problems. Of course, we had to immediately get tacos. So we ordered in and shared tacos in the Sunset House.

Vero is a wonderful sister who is helping to take care of the House while Ryan and Amanda Gray are in the States.  We have enjoyed reconnecting with Vero and her boys and seeing her faith and growth in the Lord. Our time so far her the city has been listening, reconnecting with missionaries and with Mexican Leaders.  We have enjoyed time with Benjy, Carolyn and Pierce Brednich (the other boys were in school, Sean, Jeni, Sarah and Philip McClue. We spent much of yesterday afternoon with Pedro Marin one of the Mexican workers and leaders here and with Abel Perez, one of the elders. It has been good to listen, learn and see what God is doing and seeking to discern the steps for the future of His work in Mexico.

We look forward to getting with the Henderson family this afternoon. I will meet with three of the leaders, Juan Pablo, Israel and Ro Reyes to plan and prepare for the Seminar we will have for the churches on the 11th of July.

I need some time to process everything I have heard and some down time with the family. Hopefully that will come tomorrow.

Thanks for all of the prayers,
Jay

God at Work in Leon

We had a wonderful time in Leon. We received great hospitality from Omar and Tana Palafox. We enjoyed seeing their wonderful children. We were even able to be there for Emma's sixth birthday. Emma you are a wonderful girl.  We had a great time with Shawn and Barbara Gary and their kids as well. I was so impressed with these two families and the work that God is accomplishing through them. Shawn and Barbara led the youth in their first youth retreat and it was a great success. We were able to see and spend a little time with the new AIMers that are still settling in, adjusting to culture. Thanks for the great time; John, Renato, Ramiro, Jedda, Ivanka and Trasa. We also saw Ben and Bill who are exAIMers still making a significant contribution to the work in Leon.

I was impressed with the church in Leon. They had a wonderful spirit. I was able to preach and they put up with my "chilango" Spanish, in reality, "gringo" Spanish. I did not get an exact count but there were well over 100, I guess around 120 in attendance. They obviously love one another, several of the men are taking leadership role. The adult classes are being taught by men in the congregation. The youth had their first retreat, staying at the building from Friday evening through time for the assembly on Sunday morning. We could tell that this was an important transformational time for them.

I also met a great family who are graduates from the school in Toluca and now working in Leon, the Rubios. I am encouraged to see what God is doing in Leon.

We arrived safely in Mexico City late last night (Monday the 29th). We feel like we are home walking into the Sunset House and sleeping in our old room. We look forward to being with Benjy and Carolyn Brednich this morning. Keep praying that the Lord would use us to listen, learn as he teaches us what He has in store for His kingdom in Mexico.

The picture is of a plaque on the Sunset House in Mexico City: "The Pink House...Founded in 1984 by Cline Paden." I think he actually bought the house in 1983.

On Mission In Mexico

The Lord has blessed Sherry and I to have three weeks to travel and reconnect with some of the works in Mexico. We arrived in Guadalajara on Monday and have spent the last few days with Chadd and Nancy Schroeder and their three great girls, Morgan, Natalie and Ceci.  They are great friends and it is always good to be with them. We have been able to be with Cory, Toni, Josiah, Abigail and Hannah Burns. We saw the Pruett's and the Rush families briefly for a meal.  The Rush family left on Thursday to return to the States for a year furlough. The Pruett's are making a transition back to the States in a couple of weeks. We were also able to spend some brief time with the AIMers who are doing a great job in Guadalajara. I continue to pray for God's work through His people in this city.

One of the highlights so far has been getting together with Gerardo, Carola, Cristian and Melonie Garcia. I spent most of the day yesterday with Gerardo and I was so encouraged to hear of how God is at work in their lives. Last year we were here with the Sunset Youth. We passed out the first invitations to a Diabetes Association for Youth.  They now have 140 families who are being ministered to through this association. They provide education, counseling, medical contacts and services and two retreats a year for the children and their parents. This is a Life Project for the Garcia family that is glorifying our Lord! I pray with expectation for the fruit that will be born through their service.

Meagan joined us from Mexico City on Wednesday.  Today we are on to Guanajuato to spend a day just relaxing in this unique city and then on to Leon to see God's work among His people.  God is opening my eyes to His work, needs and future dreams.

For Mexico Missions,

Jay
