The House that Sherry Built

Lord willing we will close on the sell of our house at 9208 Hope
Avenue in Lubbock tomorrow, the 30th of November. We have lived in
this house for the past 4 years. More than 5 years ago, Sherry
contacted a local builder, Stan Angelley about the possibility of
building a house for us. Stan has been building in Lubbock most of his
life and now is semi-retired. At that time he was building a house or
two a year just to keep himself going. He is an "old fashioned"
builder who is highly respected. He liked Sherry and decided to build
a house for us. He did a wonderful job and Sherry worked closely with
him to build the house specifically according to her taste. She did a
great job. It is a wonderful house. Therefore, the name, "The House
that Sherry Built."

When we decided to move to the Dallas area to work with Mission
Resource Network, we thought it would take a few months to sell the
house. We contacted a realtor and decided to start the process as soon
as we made the announcement of our transition to our Sunset family. We
made the announcement on Sunday the 25th of October. We wanted to
touch up a few things on the house before we started showing it.
Stephen Bearden, our realtor went ahead and put a "For Sale" sign out
in front of the house on Monday the 26th and told us he would not list
the house until we were ready to show it. We were doing some work and
Stephen called us on Tuesday the 27th to ask us when we would be ready
to show the house. He explained that a couple were on their way to put
a contract down on a another house when they saw the "For Sale" sign
in front of our house and wanted to see the house before they made an
offer on the other house. We finished our work and told them it would
be ready to see on Wednesday the 28th. Stephen place it on the market
on Wednesday morning. The couple came and saw it on Wednesday
afternoon and by that evening we had an good offer on the house. After
some negotiation we entered into a contract. The house was officially
on the market for 10 hours before it sold. Amazing!

We have moved into an apartment with Meagan so we can go ahead an
close on the house and will begin the process of looking for a new
home in the Dallas area. God has blessed us. It is a little emotional
leaving "The House that Sherry Built" but we are excited about a new
challenge and new ministry in Dallas/Ft. Worth. May God open the door
for a house located in an area where He wants us to minister and serve
Him.

Transitions

Sherry and I are entering into a new adventure in our life and ministry. I made the following announcement today at the Sunset Church. It will be difficult to leave Sunset but we are excited about the new challenge. We will be joining the ministry of Mission Resource Network (MRN) www.mrnet.org

Sunset Church of Christ

October 25, 2009

In the life of a disciple as well as the life of a church there are always transitions and new challenges that come our way.  Sherry and I are now facing one of those transitions.  I have informed the Sunset elders that I am resigning as Lead Minister of the Sunset Church of Christ. I have accepted a position with Mission Resource Network (MRN) as Director of Church Equipping. Sherry and I will be moving to Dallas/Ft. Worth after the first of the year.

It is with mixed emotions that Sherry and I are leaving Sunset. Almost all of my ministry experience has been with the Sunset Church. The Sunset eldership has been my spiritual shepherds since 1978. We give God praise and thanks for the wonderful partnership we have enjoyed with the Sunset Church of Christ and with Sunset International Bible Institute. We can say with great confidence that we are not leaving Sunset because of any problems or because of anything negative in our working relationship with Sunset. We are leaving because we are convinced that the mission ministry with MRN is a work to which we are called. Mission is my passion and we are at a time in our life and ministry where we need to focus on our passion and giftedness.

MRN  is a ministry focused on planting churches worldwide. MRN provides resources to missionaries as well as to the congregations that send the mission families. My role with Mission Resource Network will allow me to work with churches around the globe helping them to develop a mission focus; I will be working with missionaries, mission teams and mission churches. Sunset is one of the best mission churches that I know; therefore, I pray that our partnership and relationship will continue as we seek to touch a lost world with the good news of Jesus.

Sherry and I were raised spiritually here at Sunset; we met here, were trained in the Sunset School of Preaching, raised our children here and grew in ministry together with you. We love you and are deeply grateful for the wonderful relationships we have and will continue to have here at Sunset. I have great confidence in our shepherds and their wisdom and ability to guide you through this transition. I have great love, respect and appreciation for the ministry team with which I have been blessed to work.

Words cannot express the gratitude that I have in my heart for our relationship with Sunset and the rich blessing that it has been for me to have such a wonderful working relationship with the Sunset church and eldership. May God continue to use our partnership for his glory and the advancement of his kingdom.

Kairos Church Planting

Some have asked, "What is Kairos Church Planting?" I will quote Stan and Gena Granberg who began the ministry several years ago. "Kairos is a ministry associated with and supported by Churches of Christ. Our intent is to support the propagation of new churches that identify with, and function within, the fellowship of the Churches of Christ and the American Restoration Movement. We refer to ourselves as a facilitating ministry, a growing network of people committed to reaching new people with the gospel of Jesus and gathering them into new churches. Our purpose is summarized in the phrase New Churches in New Places for New People."

You can check out their website at http://www.kairoschurchplanting.org/ I appreciate their ministry, their staff and their vision. I pray that the Lord will multiply their tribe!

Praying for the Expansion of God's Kingdom,
Jay

Kairos Church Planting Partnership Council

I am stilling in the Preston Smith Lubbock International Airport (my kids think that the name needs to be changed, nothing against Preston Smith, they just don't understand the "international" part).  I am enduring another long delay that might get me into San Jose, California late.  I am on my way to a Partnership Council meeting with Kairos Church Planting Ministries. Stan and Gena Granberg launched off by faith to start a ministry to encourage and equip church planting in North America. This will be an interesting meeting.

Just got word that the weather has lifted in Dallas and we are boarding.
Blessings,
Jay

Back in Lubbock

Sherry and I made it back safely to Lubbock after a 3 1/2 hour layover in Dallas/Ft. Worth, yesterday. The Lord blessed us with a wonderful trip. Someone asked me this morning if we had some vacation time. We really didn't have any vacation time during this trip. However, we did get to take a few hours or a day here and there for family time. It was good to all be together in Mexico.  Meagan and Ryan will be staying longer in Mexico City. Ryan will be staying one more week and Meagan two more weeks. Ryan will be starting AIM in August and Meagan will be starting her second year of Medical School at Tech.

God has blessed us and now we have tons to process and think through after our full trip to Mexico.

Jay

Seminar in Mexico CIty

On Friday Sherry, Meagan, Ryan and I return to Mexico City to get ready for a seminar I was asked to lead for the church servant leaders. The seminar was held at the Sunset House or "Pink House." I was reminded how the Sunset House has been used as a gather place, a central location, a place to dream, share and find community for the church in Mexico. We had about 40 attending and had a great time together. We shared in a great breakfast of quesadillas, Mexican bread and fruit. We had several times of praise and prayer. The theme was "Buscando Renovacion"  or "Seeking Renewal." We discussed from Hebrews 12:1-3 that renewal is found in a relationship with Jesus Christ, listening to Him, following and obeying Him. I have been impressed lately that in our commission (Matthew 28:18-20), we are to baptize followers of Jesus in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. But our mission does not stop there, we are to "teach them to observe or obey everything that Jesus has commanded." He does not say that we are to teach them everything He commanded but rather we are to teach them to obey. This is one area in which I am trying to grow in my own ministry, focusing on "obedience in my teaching."

I taugth the group a Discovery Bible Study method that focuses on listening to the word of God, meditating on the word and thinking through what God is teaching us and then making a commitment to put the word of God into action in our life. They worked in groups and applied that method to Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and to various passages that tell us about our purpose as disciples of Christ and a community of faith, the church.

I was once again impressed with the maturity of my brothers and sisters here in Mexico and their desire to glorify the Lord. The Benito Juarez congregation that meets in the Sunset House has already planned an "all night prayer session" to continue these thoughts and the Tlalpan congregation has committed to host the next seminar for the church leaders. I believe that the church here in Mexico City is ready for some significant growth in the coming years.

Please pray for my brothers and sisters in Mexico as they seek to please the Lord and glorify His name in this massive city.

Sherry and I leave tomorrow to return to the States. Meagan and Ryan will be staying longer and enjoying time together in Mexico City. The Lord has blessed us on this trip and opened our eyes in many ways to His work and will. May God be glorified.

Cuernavaca

We arrived in Cuernavaca on Saturday the 4th and got here in time to celebrate the 4th with Paul Nash, Ben Jenkins, Doug and Sandy Holcomb and the AIMers, Andrew, Amanda and Jennie.  Paul's wife Sharita and Ben's wife, Karen are in the states right now. Cuernavaca is beautiful and we always enjoy being here.

On Sunday we were blessed to be with one of the congregations in Cuernavaca. I was asked to preach and had a great time sharing the word of God with my brothers and sisters. I love to preach in Spanish, I am not sure what the church thinks, but I have a great time!
Spanish is such a passionate and expressive language and they communicate with word pictures and images. For some reason I love to communicate in Spanish. My Spanish leaves much to be desired, but I seem to find a way to communicate. There were about 50 in attendance and I was impressed with their spirit, their love for one another and their passionate praise given to the Lord.

Sunday afternoon, I was asked to spend about an hour and a half with the leading families in both of the congregations in Cuernavaca. About 25 leaders took of their time to study together. We spoke of the strengths and weaknesses in the church here and studied from God's word regarding what steps we can take to grow in some of the areas of weakness. They were so open, receptive and honest in our discussion. I was impressed with their maturity and their desire to grow. I also showed them a simple Bible Study tool that they can use to teach others "to observe all that Jesus commanded" (Matthew 28:19-20). I am becoming convinced that part of the reason why we don't see growth in some disciples' lives is because they have not been called to "obey" the Lord as a natural part of our lives and time in the word of God.

The last two days have been spent with the AIMers here who are about to make a transition back to the States having completed their mission assignment.  We have also spent time with the missionaries here as well. They are a good group and being used to glorify the Lord.  Of course, we have been able to spend some family time since we are all here together with Sherry's parents, Doug and Sandy Holcomb. I guess they technically are my "in-laws' but I don't really thing of them in that way. They are coworkers, friends and fellow disciples in the faith. God has blessed me with a wonderful family.

No pictures this time, but I will post some pictures tomorrow. I forgot my camera on Sunday and Paul Nash is going to share some pictures with me tomorrow. Thank you for the prayers.

Jay

The Perfect Taco

Each time I travel to Mexico, I joke that I am in search of the "perfect taco." In reality my search continues and probably will the rest of my life. For a "purist" who believes that the only good "tacos al pastor" are found in Mexico City it is unbelievable that there are good tacos that exist outside of the City. I will have to admit I have been one of those purists. However, I have been converted. I have found great "tacos al pastor" in Cuernavaca at a place called "La Gringa." There are three locations in Cuernavaca and I visited two of them yesterday. I enjoyed great tacos both times. I am just trying to get all "stocked" up before I have to return to the land of hamburgers.
